Life after giving birth: Our 2 weeks of baby bliss

As the lead up to Joey's arrival got shorter I remember thinking "What happens once we're home?". Joey was 8 days overdue and I had to be induced unexpectedly so there wasn't much time to think about bringing him home and what to expect over the next week or so. You can read my birth story here. So I thought it might be a good idea to explain what happens over those first weeks for any new or expectant mums...

19th June:
Joey was born the 19th June at 9.25pm. He weighed 8lb 2oz and cried all night long.

20th June: discharge day
Before we got discharged from hospital the consultants do a routine check of the baby and also a hearing test. On the ward all new mums are given a red book which is used to document babys health, weight and any other tests. The hearing test was a nightmare, the little earbuds wouldn't stay in Joey's ears long enough for them to get a reading so they told us to make an appointment at our gp in the next week or so to get it done. We had to wait ages to get discharged because the nurses were waiting on Joey's blood results to come back but we were finally discharged at about 4pm the day after he was born . I was exhausted and wanted to go home and sleep but I knew Chris's mum would want to see Joey so we called round so she could have a cuddle. We finally got home at about 6pm and that's where all the hard work started. I took myself and Joey up to bed not knowing what to do, I tried going to sleep but Joey had other ideas and cried most of the time and then there was the battle of the breastfeeding.

21st June: First health visitor check
A health visitor usually visits you at home once you have left hospital. The day after we were discharged I knew to expect the health visitor and it was quite nice to see that it was the same midwife I'd seen at my last appointment on the day Joey was born. The aim of the visit is to check baby over, weigh and heel prick test and writes the results in babys red health book. She also checked me over by pressing my stomach to see if my uterus (I think) had retracted, checked my stitches, piles and asking about how feeding was going.

24th June: 2nd health visitor
My midwife came out again to do the same checks as last time on Joey and myself. Joey was weighed at 8lb 6oz.

25th June: hearing test
We had an appointment to go to our local gp and have Joey's hearing test done again. Thankfully they managed to get a reading and all was fine with his hearing

30th June: Registering
You have around 60 days after baby's birth to register them. Your baby has to be registered within the district of the hospital they were born. The registry office we had to go to isn't near where we live and we had to wait over a week from when we booked the appointment. Make sure that you are 100% certain of your baby's name before you go to your appointment. Chris wanted Joey to have 'Goodison' as one of his middle names and I wanted 'Grattan' (my dad's name). Leading up to his arrival we argued about which middle name went first and then we never brought the subject up before we went to register but he ended up deciding on Joseph Grattan Goodison Varley which is what I wanted. I just hope Joey actually grows up to be an everton supporter and not Man Utd or LFC.

1st July: 3rd health visitor check
This was going to be the last time that the midwife would come out to visit us, we were being signed over to our local health team. Joey now weighed 9lb 3oz and his unbiblical stump had fallen off aswell. The  midwife advise me to take Joey to get weighed at our local well baby clinic at least once a month.
So that's a rundown of all the important stuff that happens once you're at home with your new arrival. As I'm a first time mum I just took everyday as it came and didn't make too many plans. Those 2 weeks that you have as a family before dad goes back to work are precious, so don't feel like you have to go out and see people, make them come to you.

Cocoa Brown Gentle Bronze gradual tan

Over the years I have approacked fake tan very cautiously. I've mostly used it in the form of moisturisers that smell like old buscuits and have had 2 professional spray tans which always leave me looking like an umpalumpa.

I've tried lots of products but have never found a good tanning product to use on a regular basis. So when the golden tanned people at Cocoa Brown asked whether I'd want to try the Gentle Bronze Gradual Tan product I was really excited. The Cocoa Brown tanning range was launched in November 2012 and has had unprecedented success ever since. Marissa, founder of Cocoa Brown has developed the brand to include a ‘wardrobe of tans’ including eight sister products to suit different types of tanners and non-tanners alike!

I'd heard some really good things about Cocoa Brown over the years but I've never felt brave enough to try any of their products....until now. Cocoa Brown sent me a lovely pink parcel with a tube of their Gentle Bronze gradual tan. This product is what I would describe as a tinted moisturiser, so you can use the lotion as you would your usual body moisturiser everyday.

Before I used the gradual tan, the day before I did actually prepare my skin as if I was having a proper fake tan. So I exfoliated my whole body with Cocoa Brown Tough Stuff (purchased myself), I've never used it before so i'll do a separate review of that. After exfoliating, I shaved my legs and underarms, once I was dry I used my usual body moisturiser. I'm no fake tan expert but when you moisturise in preparation for any tan it's important to moisturise the places that are prone to dryness like knees, elbows, ankles and feet. Marissa Carter the founder and creater of Cocoa Brown has some great tips on exfoliating here.

The gradual tan lotion when squeezed out is actually brown in colour so it's a bit easier to see where you've applied it. You don't get that instant wiff of burnt biscuits, it's actually quite a nice floral smell. The first day I used the product I applied the lotion using a tanning mitt, which just made it easier for me to cover everywhere. After wearing the product for a good few hours I could see a hint of a glow, I did get a slight wiff of the usual fake take smell though. I have continued to use the lotion throughout the week and I am very pleased with the overall colour, I haven't experienced any streaks or usual tell tale signs of fake tan apart from the smell.
After 4 days of using Gentle Bronze
Overall I am very please with the product, I will definitely continue to use it.  Not only has it given me a great tan but its made my skin feel supersoft aswell. The great thing about gradual tan is that it allows you to build up your tan to whatever shade you want. As a fake tan beginner I've found the product really easy to use and hopefully once I am more comfortable using the gradual tan for I may progress to the more advanced Cocoa Brown tanning products. I would recommend this product to any self tan beginners who want an easy and low cost product with great results.

Cocoa Brown Gentle Bronze Gradual tan is available from a range of stockists including Superdrug & Primark. Are you a Cocoa Brown fan? I'd love to know your thoughts or any tips.

*I was sent this product for free in return for an honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Weekend Baby Style #10

It's been ages since we last did a #weekendbabystyle linky! So while its been lovely and sunny this week Joey has been wearing some of his summer clobber.

When Joey was born he was bought quite a few clothes from people that were sized 9-12months which were all summery stuff. This little romper suit was part of a set and I've been itching for him to wear it. We sat in the garden for a bit while it was warm and it kept him cool.
Romper: Baby Club at Boots
Hat: George at Asda ( 2 pack)
I don't think Joey has any clothes this colour so I love how bright and summery it is.

We only nipped out to do some shopping so I wanted to make sure he was cool.

Vest: George at Asda
Leggings: F&F Tesco
The vest that he's wearing I picked up from ASDA last week, I don't know if you can tell but it has little whales over it. The leggings he's had a whole now from Tesco (the girls section), they're pretty tight on him now so I'll have to get him a bigger size.

The weather has been cloudy and quite cool today so summery clothes didn't feel necessary.

Vest: H&M
Leggings: Fred & Noah
I'm a big fan of dressing Joey in long sleeve tops and H&M have a great range of basics for babies. As for the weekend baby style post should be without a dash of F&N.

So that's it for this week's #weekendbabystyle.

Joey's 10 months old

Joey is now in double figures and is 10 months old...2 months away from the big ONE.

This month it seems as though Joey has changed quite a lot. He seems taller and more gorgeous everyday. He rolls over at every opportunity aswell, which makes nappy changing rather difficult. He also keeps lunging out of his rocker which gives me a mini heart attack. He's also discovered his man parts and keeps tugging on it, it's quite funny and i keep telling him he'll pull it off.

I took him to get weighed on 9th April and he was 20lb 13oz which is good considering he'd lost weight the last time. His eczema has cleared up a lot after using his creams for a couple of weeks .

Not much has changed in his feeding apart from I've dropped Joey's nighttime bottle.  The only reason I had to stop his night feed is because he's been waking up in the morning wet because his nappy has leaked through.

He's finally sleeping in his cot ! I thought the day would never come but he's been in his cotbed for about 3 weeks now. I keep thinking that if i say outloud how good he's been sleeping that I'll jinx it and he'll want to go back to his moses. He's been sleeping through the night aswell, apart from twice when he woke me up at 4 am because he had wet himself and turned himself over. His sleeping has been really good though. He has 2 naps during the day which are about 30mins long.

His top two teeth are coming through at the moment, he hasn't been too bad just a few moany episodes here and there.

The weather is getting a lot warmer now so we've made a start of dressing him in summery clothes. Joey has lived in long sleeve tops all winter so it's nice to see his arms out in short sleeve tshirts. It won't be long though until he'll be in the 12+ size clothes.

He loves...
- eating mummy's phone
- pressing buttons on the TV remote
- tipping point
- ice cream
- rolling over
- banging his walker against the door
- brushing his teeth

Eventhough Joey isn't walking yet he is such an active baby. Hopefully next month he'll be crawling but I know how destructive he'll be once he can get around more easier. I love seeing him change all the time.

Joey's 1st Birthday gift ideas

My little man is going to be a whole year old soon, the time has gone so quick I can't believe it's nearly a whole year since he was born.
So I have an idea of what to get him...

1) Photoshoot - Back when i was pregnant with Joey I did a makeover photoshoot and did lots of bump photos. Now that Joey's here I've been meaning to take him for a Photoshoot as Joey is quite a photogenic baby. A good friend of mine from uni has her own photography studio so I think I'll book her to do it. I've seen lots of ideas of a cake smash shoot which is cute but I think the messiness of it would kill me. So maybe just a normal Photoshoot.
2) Keepsake cuddly toy - I'm a big fan of personalised things and ive been wanting to get Joey a keepsake toy made with some of his newborn clothes. I've found a lady in my area who does various types/animals at about £25. It won't be something that he'll be able to play with as it's handmade but it's something creative to do with his favourite baby clothes. I bought him his Boco Baby blanket which he loves but when he gets too old for a blanket ill get it made into a pillow.

3) Smart Trike - I've seen these out and about quite a lot recently and think they're a great alternative to taking the pram out and are like a bike. They are suitable from when baby is 10 months up until they are toddlers.

4) Everton football kit - Joey's middle name is Goodison so he has to get some thing Everton related for his birthday. He has a few Everton bits already but we've been meaning to get him a proper kit for ages.

5) Personalised toy basket - our front room is so cluttered with Joey's toys and we have no where put them at the moment. I really wanted to get him a toy chest but it wouldn't fit in his room at the moment so when I saw this one from My 1st Years I thought it was brilliant.

6) Fisher Price Newborn to toddler portable rocker - Joey has had his Fisher Price bouncer since he was born and has used it every day but it's not getting too small for him and needs something bigger. Someone had recommended this as her baby had got too big for his old bouncer. So I'd say this is the most important present because he uses his chair everyday.

So those are the main gift ideas, I'm sure we'll get him more and he'll probably be spoiled by other friends and family as well. We're thinking of having a small party for him because his birthday will be on a weekend. I'm so excited about him turning one!
If you have any 1st birthday gift ideas feel free to comment below.

Frightening finger foods & Family meals

It's been a while now since I've done a weaning update. Joey's 9 months old now and he is really good with his food, he will eat anything.
Eating his sandwich
Since our last weaning update he has progressed quite a bit and he's eating more family meals. I'm not the most confident of cooks but I love to make meals that all three of us can eat instead of having to prepare something different for Joey. The only food that he isn't sure of is fish, he always pulls a face when I give him anything fishy. But his meals look something like this...
Toast, baby cereal or Multigrain
Ham sandwich and fruit
Spaghetti Bolognese, Chicken curry, Pork caserole, Sunday chicken dinner, pasta bake, corned beef hash.
yoghurt, fruit, chocolate  (very occasionly).

So that's an idea of the sort of thing he likes at the moment. Finger foods are hit and miss at the moment, when ever I've given him finger foods he just threw them on the floor. The finger foods I've tried are Organix Strawberry Rice Cakes, Organix Carrot sticks, Heinz Biscotti and fruit. When he first tried the rice cakes he just threw them on the floor but I kept trying them with him and then he got the hang of putting them in his mouth and sucking but then he'd tear off a bit and he'd start chocking. The same thing happened with the Biscotti bits so I've become a bit scared of giving him finger foods.

We also discovered recently that Joey LOVES ice cream. When I mean love I mean if we give him a little lick of mummy or daddy's ice cream and then take it away he has a massive crying tantrum. I'm really happy though that he's experiencing new foods and i love seeing him enjoying his food.
Ice cream meltdown
What do your baby's love to eat? Any good meal ideas? I'd love to hear from you.

Netflix Stream Team: April

As you might have read I have recently become a part of the Netflix Stream Team, If you don't know what I'm talking about take a look at my #StreamTeam announcement. So every month I'll be recieving newsletters from Netflix about all the latest shows to watch and it's my job to make sure you all know about it.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
I'd heard a lot about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt being a really funny new US TV show written by Tina Fey (Mean Girls). This series has been described as the first of It's kind and I can see why, Kimmy played by Ellie Kemper (Bridesmaids) is a woman who is rescued from a doomsday cult/underground bunker and starts life over as a nanny for a socialite (Jane Krakowski from "30 Rock") in New York City. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers and a couple of past-due library books, she takes on a world she didn't think even existed anymore. I've watched quite a few episodes now and I am hooked, I thought I'd watch the first episode and not be keen on it but I can't help but want to join Kimmy on her journey. The first season is available to watch exclusively on Netflix so check it out.

Another new US show exclusive to Netflix, "Marvel's Daredevil" is a live action series that follows the journey of attorney Matt Murdock, who in a tragic accident was blinded as a boy but gifted with extraordinary senses. Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night. I loved the film version of Daredevil played by Ben Affleck so was really keen to see how Netflix portrayed the story. I've only watched one episode and it is very dark and intense...completely different setting to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Even though I've only watched the one episode, I can't wait to watch the rest and find out whether their is a different storyline every episode.

House of Cards

I've some great things about House of Cards, everyone seems to be watching it so I think I'll try out the first episode. "Betrayed by the White House, Congressman Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) embarks on a ruthless rise to power. Blackmail, seduction and ambition are his weapons." This sounds like a great plot and with it being another Netflix original I don't think you can go wrong.

Other new releases:
I've included something to watch for all the family so their shouldn't be anyone bored over the Easter holidays. I'd love to know what you are enjoying on Netflix at the moment.

Eczema in babies

In Joey's last update I mentioned that he'd been diagnosed with Eczema, I thought it might be good to do a post about it incase their are any new parents needing advice. Unfortunately, it seems I've deleted the pictures of when his skin was at his worst so this is what it looks like now and you can just about see the patches (he wouldn't stop wriggling).
Left: Arm | Right: Thigh
The symptoms started about 2 months ago when I noticed a red dry patch of skin on Joey's thigh, he didn't have any other patches and I just kept applying some baby lotion hoping it would clear up. The patch continued to get more red and looked as if it was travelling down his thigh and had popped up under his leg and in his arm creases. It didn't seem to be bothering him but nothing I was using seemed to make any difference so I took him to the doctor (not our usual doctor) and he didn't diagnose anything. He just advised I stop washing him with any bath products and prescribed some Aveeno moisturising cream.

We used the Aveeno cream for about 2 weeks and their was no change so made an appointment with our usual doctor and straight away he said it was eczema and proscribed us with three different products:
- Hydrocortisone cream
- Zerocream emollient
- Zerolatum Emollient bath additive
The hydrocortisone is a steroid cream which I use on Joey twice a day on the worst patches of dryness. Because it's quite a strong cream which can thin the skin you should only use a small amount. I usually apply the hydrocortisone in a morning when I'm getting him dressed and then before he gets ready for bed in the evening. The Zerocream emollient is a moisturising lotion which I apply all over Joey's body around 3 times a day, this cream is mainly just to keep his skin moisturised after the intensity of the hydrocortisone. The third lotion/potion we were prescribed is Zerolatum bath additive which is a liquid that can be put in the bath or applied to baby's damp skin.

While doing my research into eczema I came across a skin care brand called Oilatum who specialise in making products for children and adults who have dry skin/eczema issues. The products they produce are available from retailers and very similar to one or two of the products Joey has been prescribed. I had a look at their website and they have some great information about caring for babies who have dry skin and eczema, check it out here

We've been using the products for a couple of weeks now and Joey's dry patches have cleared up quite a bit which is great. I'm guessing we just continue to use the creams on him for the forseable now. Hopefully as Joey grows older maybe he'll just grow out of the eczema. One of my favourite bloggers, Jess from Lilypod & Sweetpea recently posted about how her son Jasper has also got eczema. You can check out her vlog here.

I hope this post can be of some help for parents who's babies have dry skin or eczema. If anyone has any products or tips that they could recommend that would be great.

Orange is the New Black #SorryNotSorry

I've been waiting patiently for season 3 of Orange is the New Black to start but yesterday the trailer for OITNB was released and i'm now getting a bit impatient for the new season to start. If you haven't seen the new trailer....

"The women of Litchfield unapologetically return for the third coming. With a crisis of faith and their beliefs and loyalties being tested, each character must decide what and who to believe in."

It seems ages ago since I finished Series 2 and I've sort of forgotten what happened. So I think the best thing to do in this situation is rewatch the last few episodes. I've only very recently become a part of the Netflix Stream Team so I don't have any exclusive news to share with you but hopefully I will soon. Just incase anyone from Netflix is reading this...I am completely available for any OITNB screening!

Season 3 of Orange is the New Black starts on 12th June exclusively on Netflix. If you haven't already been introduced to the ladies of Litchfield Seasons 1 & 2 are available to watch on Netflix.

What do you think about Orange is the New Black? Are you a fan or not? I'd love to know your views.

Netflix Stream Team

I've got some exciting news to share with you all!

I've been approached by the fantastic people at Netflix and invited to become a member of the Netflix Stream Team which is part of a global network of over 500+ bloggers we all have two things in common
1) we are mums (and dads)
2) we love entertainment

About Netflix
If you don't know about Netflix already it provides on-demand Internet streaming of films, TV shows and documentaries to people around the world.  In 2014 it was reported that their were more than 50million users globally. To fit in with everyones different lifestyles Netflix can be used on a variety of different devices such as;

  • Computer
  • Games console
  • Smart tv
  • Satellite box
  • Tablets/ipads
  • Mobile phone

Whatever device you link up to your Netflix account it will remember what you have watched and what position you left your last viewing at which is fantastic! They have also made it really easy for the whole family to use as they have made it possible for different members of the family to have their own user mode.

At £5.99 per month I personally think that Netflix is a great investment. I've been using Netflix for years and I really enjoy the service so I am beyond excited to be given this opportunity. I own so many dvds so when I don't want to rewatch a film I've seen for the 100th time it's always refreshing to know I have Netflix to turn to.

Being part of the stream team isn't just about slobbing about in my pj's being hooked on the latest boxset, I'll also be getting invited to some exclusive Netflix events and get to mingle with other members of the team. I will be receiving a 12month subscription for Netflix and monthly newsletters letting me know of all the up and coming releases to the service. In addition to all that loveliness I'll keep you all up to date on any of Netflix's latest releases.

In the meantime here are a few of my Netflix faves:
Orange is the New Black - I started watching this a few months ago to see what all the fuss was about and at first I wasn't too keen on it. But as I watched more episodes I became hooked and raced through the season 1 and then demolished season 2 aswell. I don't know what it is but each of the characters gets you hooked. Season 3 will soon be available and I can't wait.
Olympus has fallen - I'd seen the trailers for this and didn't think it would be a film that would appeal to me, I'm not really into machine gun wielding films but I LOVE GĂ©rard Butler so I gave it a go. I was hooked from the start and i hear that there's going to a 2nd installment which is going to be called 'London has fallen'.
Safe Haven - I'm a sucker for romantic films and this was another film that I'd wanted to watch but never got round to buying. The main characters are Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough, Josh is pretty good eye candy and the film is good too.
22 Jump Street - this is the 2nd installment of the Jump Street films featuring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as undercover officers. This time they are undercover college students and it is hilariously funny. Usually 2nd or 3rd films can be quite rubbish but I thought this was better than the first.

I'll probably be doing regular Netflix posts and letting you all know the exclusive news.  I'd love to know what you think about Netflix or can recommend anything for me to watch?

Thanks for reading

Disclaimer: As part of the Netflix Stream Team I have been given 12 months subscription in return for writing regular posts about the service. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

Sassy Bloom box Products

As you may have seen, last month Joey recieved his first Sassy Bloom Box. We filmed us unboxing it which you can see here but I thought it now would be good to do a review of the items that we recieved in that first box now that he's used them. I would have loved to have done a vlog for this but I just don't have time at the moment.

Rattle Toy - As soon as we took this out of the box Joey was mesmerised by it. It's nice and colourful and has a rattle inside so he loves to make a noise with it.

Nuby Grip and Sip - RRP £2.99 Joey has quite a few beakers but he hates them so I really wasn't expecting him to take to this one but we use it every day for his meal time drinks or when he has hiccups. He's not managed to hold it by himself yet but it's definitely no spill which is great.

Socks on - RRP £6.00 -  I'd been wanting to buy a pair of these for Joey for ages, he hates wearing socks and is a nightmare always pulling them off and then eating his socks. So when we received a pair of Socks on in his Sassy Bloom I thought my prayers had been answered...oh no. He had them on for a whole day and all he tried to do was get them off. He didn't manage to completely get them off but he did manage to unhook one of them. So I don't know whether I'd invest in another pair.

Baby Dan Fingersafe – RRP £2.99 - Joey isn't crawling yet so we haven't had to baby proof the doors yet but I know these will be really helpful once he does start crawling/walking.

Organix Multigrain Mini Cereal Puffs 7+ – RRP 80P - for breakfast Joey usually has baby Multi grain or muesli with fruit in it so I was a bit curious to see if he would like this.  He was a bit unsure at first as it is a different consistency to what he's used to and it is plain. He ate it all but I probably wouldn't go out and buy it.

Munchkin Wonder Waterway – RRP £5.99- Joey loves bathtime, when he doesn't have any toys in the bath he just splashes about and causes a bit of a mess. So bath toys are very important to keep him occupied and happy. This Munchkin toy separates into 4 different characters and each piece passes water through differently which fascinates Joey. He loves this and gets loads of fun with it.

Gumigem Miller Pendant – RRP £12.95- to be honest I haven't actually used this yet, I put it down and now can't find it. This pendant is attached to a piece of string for mum or dad to wear and then baby bites the teether if they're feeling discomfort when teething.Eveb though i havent used this product i think Joey will like it because recently Joey has started tugging on a necklace that I wear. So I'm hoping/guessing that once I have this pendant round my neck he'll love to put it in his mouth like he does with everything else.

Hello Fresh £25 voucher - as soon as I took this out of the box I knew I probably wouldn't be using it. I had a look at the website and they create a box of ingredients for you to make a healthy family meal. I'm not saying I won't use it, it might be good to just try it.

So that's everything. I was really happy with our first box and I hope to buy more in the future.
